Guide to dry gin

As thrilled as we were to read that with the amount of alcohol Her Maj, Queen Elizabeth is said to consume on a daily basis she could technically be classified as a binge drinker, we could hardly claim to be strangers to the drinking habits of old Queens.

Here’s our guide to the perfect Dry Gin Martini which, we understand from Margaret Rhodes, the Queen’s cousin, makes a perfectly acceptable lunchtime tipple in the royal household

Dry Gin Martini

Pour 2 oz. of gin and about 1 oz. of dry vermouth into a shaker filled with ice cubes. Stir for half a minute, strain it into a chilled cocktail glass.

Add a dash of orange or Angostura bitters if desired, and garnish with one green olive or a lemon peel twist.

Alternatives include equal parts sweet and dry vermouth (perfect martini), 50-50 (equal parts gin and vermouth), vodka (in lieu of gin), olive brine (dirty) and a cocktail onion garnish (Gibson).

By all accounts, some members of the royal family prefer to shake and to stir. We prefer not to comment.
